With as many as five baseball and softball fields, with professional lighting and other amenities, Hammond Optimist Youth Sports Complex offers one of the city's best sports facilities. The complex is prominently aimed at the youth, and holds a number of related tournaments including the Cal Ripken 12U World Series. There's bleachers and concession stands as well for the spectators.

»Wicker Memorial Park

Located in the heart of the city, the sprawling Wicker Memorial Park offers some of the best recreational facilities in the city. The beautifully landscaped park has a spacious play area for kids, with slides and other play equipment as well as a large splash pad to cool off in the summers. For the adults, there are bike and walking paths, with a bike rental facility available on site. Pet dogs can join in the fun at the Dog Run area, where they can run about and play to their heart's content. Besides this, the park also boasts of a challenging 18-hole golf course, with an on-site pro-shop. Located at the Wicker Memorial Park, this 18-hole golf course is considered to be one of the finest in the area. Wicker Memorial Golf Course is a challenging, par 72 course, beautifully landscaped with ponds and other elements. »Carlson Oxbow Park

Carlson Oxbow Park is a wetland nature park located on the Little Calumet River. Originally intended for flood control measures, the area was turned into a park in 1998 after the river was straightened. Today, the park is a natural oasis, home to a rich variety of native wildlife, including the woodchuck and eastern cottontail rabbit as well as bird species like the house wren and blue winged teal. Hiking and fishing are some of the most popular activities as the park.

»William W. Powers State Recreation Area

William W. Powers State Recreation Area is a lovely expanse of lakeside greenery inviting local families and visitors to enjoy the natural sights of Chicago. The park is centered around Wolf Lake, a 419 acre expanse of water that offers six miles of fishing along its sandy banks. The site housed a Nike Ajax missile at the height of the Cold War crisis, with a defunct model of the same missile present on the site today. A diverse assortment of wildlife in the park ranges from Monk Parakeets to deer and coyotes.

»Gibson Woods Nature Preserve

An oasis of nature sitting amidst the urban locales of Hammond, Gibson Woods Nature Preserve offers a peek into the native topography that the region once had. The park spans 131 acres (53.01 hectares) and is an excellent example dunes and swales that were prevalent in the Great Lakes region. The park harbors a fine array of native and endangered plant and animal species, and is of great interest to botanists as well as wildlife enthusiasts. »Lost Marsh Golf Course

Built on reclaimed land, Lost Marsh offers one of the finest golfing facilities in the region. The main course is an 18-hole facility, with stunning water features and beautiful landscaping. Aside from this, there is also a smaller, 9-hole executive course for special events. The grand clubhouse sitting at the heart of the course was built in 2009, in striking Prairie-style, and houses locker rooms, a Pro-Shop as well as an elegant restaurant overlooking the course. »Wolf Lake Aquatic Play Center

Located at Wolf Lake, the Aquatic Play Center offers a fun respite for kids from the summer heat. The expansive splash pad is fitted with fixed as well as rotating shooters that spew cool water streams in 90 minute sessions. Once done, you can relax in the tranquil picnic areas and grab a bite at the numerous concession stands at the park. There's a spacious area with play equipment for the kids as well. »Indian Boundary Prairie

The Indian Boundary Prairie is composed of a group of four separate prairies - Dropseed, Gensburg, Paintbrush and Sundrop - that together form what is Illinois' largest surviving expanse of grassland. Breathtaking vistas and new discoveries await around every corner. The prairies are home to a diverse and varied plethora of plants and wildlife, including a multitude of butterflies, birds and wild flowers. The landscape is forever changing, with new and wondrous sights to behold throughout the year. The preserve is managed by the Nature Conservancy and Northeastern Illinois University, in conjunction with the Friends of the Indian Boundary Prairies. Apart from serving as a safe haven for a variety of rare and endangered species, the prairies also form the perfect backdrop for a host of awareness and educational programs that highlight the importance of conserving our natural heritage. Visitors are welcome to explore the preserve on their own, and a number of pathways have been laid down to help guide the way. As you make your way through the preserve, keep an eye out for rare plant, butterfly and bird species including the eastern prairie white fringed orchid, the Aphrodite fritillary and great yellow legs. The preserve is open daily from dawn to dusk. Located just off Route 57, all four prairies lie within Markham's city limits.

»Harborside International Golf Center

The Two 18-hole Bent grass courses, Port and Starboard, at Harborside International Golf Center are open to the public. Even though this is a public course, many consider it as fine as the best private courses. This place offers various facilities. Green fees on a weekday for a 18-hole is USD65; gas carts are included. Tee times are accepted up to 14 days in advance. There is a dress policy - no denim and collared shirt. Bermuda shorts are required.

This Sports Center is named after the renowned Chicago business tycoon, Jacoby D. Dickens.
