»The Skin Of Our Teeth

March 06, 2015 8:00 PM

Thornton Wilder, a Pulitzer Prize winner for "Our Town", took home the same prestigious award for this allegorical satire that follows the Antrobus family of New Jersey, and their melodramatic maid Sabina, through just about all of human history. Brought to life by Houston's Theatre Southwest, this perpetually befuddled yet indefatigable clan somehow manages to endure despite facing an absurd series of catastrophes, ranging from a suburban iceberg to massive coastal flooding and even an apocalyptic war. But "The Skin of Our Teeth" is also the story of the theater company putting on the play, adding yet another layer of meaning to the proceedings.

»Murder By Natural Causes

March 06, 2015 8:30 PM

Richard Levinson and William Link created "Columbo", "Mannix" and "Murder, She Wrote", but they never penned a mystery more fiendishly clever than "Murder by Natural Causes". Though a world-famous mentalist and astonishing performer, Arthur Sinclair has a weak heart that leaves him vulnerable to much more than cardiac arrest. So when he finds himself in the middle of a murder plot, he'll need all his strength -- to say nothing of his famed psychic powers -- to determine what's really going on. Originally a TV movie starring Hal Holbrook, "Murder by Natural Causes" now comes to the stage in a special production by Theatre Suburbia. Be thrilled, hoodwinked and delighted by a murder mystery from two of the genre's sharpest minds.

»Broadway For All

March 06, 2015 7:30 PM

Usually you have to wait for the Tony Awards in June for a moving and musical tribute to Broadway's best. But now a glittering valentine to live musical theater has arrived early: "Broadway for All", a hilarious cabaret that spans decades of theatrical history from "South Pacific" to "Into the Woods" to "Wicked". For the third year in a row, the talented singers and musicians of Music Box Theater bring the bright lights and brilliant sounds of 42nd and Broadway to Colquitt and Kirby. Peppered with the company's own zany brand of humor -- and more than a few winks and nudges -- "Broadway for All" abundantly delivers on its title promise: an all-new, all-singing, all-wonderful production for all ages.

Conceived as the project of Noah Jeffries, who grew up playing music in his family's bluegrass band, Austin-based MilkDrive is fittingly a bluegrass band, but it incorporates elements of jazz and swing as well, bringing to mind the work of master jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. With each band member highly renowned (and having the national awards to prove it) for their individual mastery of their instrument, the group's music showcases lightning-fast finger-picking, technical prowess and complete mastery over stringed instruments. MilkDrive performs live throughout the country, but plays the majority of its shows in Austin, where it regularly opens for major bluegrass artists.

»Red Molly

March 06, 2015 9:30 PM

Red Molly is an American folk trio from New York that formed in 2004 as the experiment of three solo singer/songwriters who were curious how they might sound as a group. Very impressed with their work as a band, the three ladies of Red Molly decided to leave their solo acts behind in favor of pursuing a career as a band. The decision proved to be a good one, as evidenced by the band being named Top New Artist of the Year by Boston's famed WUMB radio station in 2006. Since then, the group has started to transition away from Americana and folk in favor of a more pop-oriented sound, with a new album expected to highlight this new direction in 2011.
